Nuclear Energy Projects with Russia Begin in Algeria by 2025

Russia and Algeria are progressing with their collaboration in the peaceful application of nuclear energy, building upon established direct working relationships between their respective agencies. This expanding cooperation is underpinned by the intergovernmental agreement signed in 2014 and further reinforced by the "Roadmap for Cooperation in Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy" adopted during the 2024 International Atomexpo. Practical execution of these agreed initiatives is slated to begin in 2025.

A particularly promising area of this partnership is nuclear medicine. In September 2023, Russia's State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom) and the Algerian Atomic Energy Commission (COMENA) formalized their collaboration with a memorandum focused on nuclear medicine. This agreement encompasses the development of nuclear medicine infrastructure, the promotion of advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies, the production of radiopharmaceuticals, and the professional training of specialists in the field.

Furthering these efforts, COMENA and Rosatom are set to jointly host a seminar in Algiers in October 2025, concentrating on the non-energy applications of nuclear technology across various sectors including healthcare, industry, agriculture, and desalination. A subsequent seminar in November 2025 will delve specifically into healthcare and nuclear medicine, where Russia has proposed establishing nuclear medicine centers, manufacturing radiopharmaceuticals, expanding radiotherapy services, and cultivating expert personnel. These activities highlight Algeria's objective to draw on Russia's experience in peaceful nuclear energy, with expectations for continued mutually beneficial cooperation.
