Banque d’Algérie Extérieure Launches Sharia-Compliant Bus Murabaha

The Banque d'Algérie Extérieure (BEA) has launched a new Islamic financing product, "Murabaha for Buses," aimed at facilitating the acquisition of buses for both individuals and institutions. This introduction represents an expansion of the bank's Sharia-compliant banking services available across its network. The initiative specifically addresses the need for renewed public transport options, providing a new financial avenue for potential bus owners.
Under the "Murabaha for Buses" framework, the bank first purchases the bus directly before selling it to the customer at a pre-agreed price. This price incorporates the original acquisition cost, a profit margin, and all applicable fees and taxes, adhering strictly to Sharia principles which require the bank to possess the asset before its sale to the client. The financing term can extend up to ten years, with requirements including Takaful insurance guarantees and a serious deposit margin from the customer.
This new offering complements BEA's existing range of Islamic financing products, which includes Murabaha for cars, real estate, and goods, alongside Ijara for equipment and Salam financing. The launch aligns with a broader trend among public banks to provide financing solutions for new bus acquisitions. This collective effort supports the national strategy to modernize the country's transport fleet by enabling the replacement of older buses, particularly those 25 years or older, with new vehicles, thereby diversifying financing tools for transporters seeking Sharia-compliant options.
