Foreign Minister Attaf Engages New OIC Secretary-General

Ahmed Attaf, Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs, participated in the 23rd extraordinary session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on August 27. During the session, Mauritanian candidate Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed was endorsed as the new OIC Secretary-General, succeeding Hussein Ibrahim Taha of Chad.

Following the endorsement, Minister Attaf met with the newly elected OIC Secretary-General, Mr. Ould Cheikh Ahmed, to offer his congratulations and convey Algeria's unwavering support for his tenure. Both officials reviewed the current state and future prospects of the OIC, emphasizing the importance of enhancing its performance and activating its role in confronting prevailing challenges. They underscored the organization's capacity to serve the interests of its member states and defend their just causes, particularly the Palestinian issue, in line with its foundational principles.

During his address at the session, Minister Attaf reaffirmed Algeria's steadfast position in support of the Palestinian cause and the Palestinian people's inalienable national rights, including their right to establish an independent, sovereign state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, in accordance with international legitimate resolutions. He further called for an end to aggression on Arab lands, stressing the necessity of respecting state sovereignty and territorial integrity, promoting de-escalation, and prioritizing dialogue and peaceful solutions to address crises. The Minister highlighted that adopting dialogue and peaceful resolutions would contribute to creating favorable conditions for establishing security and stability in the Middle East, while also emphasizing the significance of strengthening joint Islamic action and unifying member states' stances in facing challenges confronting the Islamic world.
