Nigerien Premier’s Visit Expands Bilateral Initiatives
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune received Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine and an accompanying high-level delegation during a working visit to Algeria. The extensive Algerian presence at the meeting included Lieutenant General Saïd Chengriha, Chief of Staff of the People's National Army, along with ministers responsible for hydrocarbons, energy, finance, post and telecommunications, and public works, underscoring the broad scope of bilateral engagement. This gathering highlights the growing dynamism in Algerian-Nigerien relations, marked by an accelerated phase of development and expansion across various areas of mutual interest.
The Algerian Prime Minister, Seifi Gharib, affirmed the commitment to enhancing bilateral ties, noting that the shared political will of President Tebboune and Nigerien President Lieutenant General Abdourahamane Tiani has propelled relations forward. Key areas of focus include energy initiatives, such as the Kafra oil field project, which has entered a new exploratory phase and represents a significant milestone in the Algerian-Nigerien energy partnership. Algeria has also pledged support for the major maintenance program of Niger's Zinder refinery, assistance in marketing crude oil, supplying hydrocarbon derivatives, and expanding storage and distribution capacities. Furthermore, progress was acknowledged on the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, with satisfaction expressed regarding the pace of joint work towards its realization, alongside the completion of Algeria's section of the Trans-Saharan fiber optic link and efforts to connect road and rail networks, providing Niger with a land corridor to Algerian Mediterranean ports.
Cooperation also extends to defense and security, with notable progress observed in efforts to bolster border security and regional stability. This was reinforced by Algeria's delivery of four helicopters and military equipment to Niger on August 9, fulfilling directives from President Tebboune. This initiative contributes to building the Nigerien army's capabilities in equipment, training, and experience exchange to counter regional security challenges. Simultaneously, the partnership encompasses a significant humanitarian and social dimension, including ongoing projects such as a multi-service clinic, a blood dialysis center, and an Islamic center in Agadez. Algeria continues to offer educational and training opportunities for Nigerien students and trainees in its universities and vocational centers, further solidifying the brotherly ties between the two nations.
