Rym Maincer’s Art Explores Algerian, Kanak Colonial Heritage

Rym Maincer, an Algerian author and director, has created 'RÉSONANCE', a new transmedia work that forges a poignant connection between Kabyle and Kanak memories related to colonial heritage. Set for its premiere on September 29, 2026, at the University of New Caledonia, the ambitious project explores how the new generation can transform past traumas into foundations for their futures. Maincer, born in Tizi-Ouzou, leverages her unique background to bridge historical narratives between Algeria and the Pacific, offering a constructive initiative in cultural remembrance.

The narrative of 'RÉSONANCE' centers on Rose, a young Kanak woman, and Mahdi, a descendant of Algerians deported to the Pacific after the 1871 Kabylie uprising against French presence. Through their intersecting paths, the work sheds light on the often-invisibilized cultural and linguistic specificity of these Amazigh descendants, who are historically referred to as 'Arabs of New Caledonia.' The project fosters an understanding of how recognition of respective trajectories can serve as a catalyst for connection and healing, celebrating the enduring identity of Algerian heritage abroad.

Breaking traditional storytelling molds, 'RÉSONANCE' integrates hybrid animated film, literature, original music, and generative artificial intelligence. Conceived as a Live Storytelling Event, it features a distinctive aesthetic blending synthetic visual creation, 3D modeling, and archival materials. Maincer champions the use of digital spaces to keep cultures vibrant, and in a personal and artistic journey, reincorporated her Amazigh language and Tifinagh alphabet into Mahdi's character arc. The work has already gained international recognition, earning selections at renowned festivals and is notably in competition at the Timimoun International Short Film Festival in Algeria, further underscoring its global and national relevance and Algeria's cultural capabilities.
