Algeria-Niger Alliance Progresses Major Trans-Saharan Projects
Algeria and Niger have established a comprehensive strategic partnership, encompassing security, energy, and infrastructure sectors, following extensive meetings between Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and his Nigerien counterpart, Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine. This initiative reflects an accelerated convergence between the two nations, building on deep relations of brotherhood, solidarity, and good neighborliness. Both parties acknowledged the unprecedented dynamism characterizing their bilateral ties, driven by the strong political will of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and General Abdourahamane Tiani.
The partnership includes significant security and energy commitments. Algeria delivered a military gift to Niger on August 9, comprising four helicopters and military equipment, in line with President Tebboune's directives. This underscores Algeria's commitment to securing shared borders, asserting that Niger's security and stability are integral to its own. In the energy domain, Algeria announced a new phase for oil exploration in Niger's Kaffara field and renewed its pledge to support major maintenance for Niger's Zinder refinery, assist with international marketing of its crude oil, and supply the Nigerien market with petroleum derivatives. Following the rapid completion of the Beniamey power generation plant, discussions are ongoing for the rehabilitation of Niger's older distribution networks and stations.
Integrated regional projects, crucial for continental integration, are also being accelerated. Notable progress was highlighted for the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, and Algeria has completed its section of the Trans-Saharan Fiber Optic Backbone. Efforts are underway to establish a land corridor connecting Niger to Algerian Mediterranean ports through road and rail projects. Furthermore, the partnership extends to humanitarian and human capacity development initiatives, with preparations for a multi-service clinic, a dialysis center, and an Islamic center in Agadez. Algerian vocational training centers and universities are opening their doors to Nigerien trainees and students, fostering knowledge transfer and skill development. Both countries expressed satisfaction with tangible progress in implementing existing agreements and reiterated their determination to accelerate the realization of all remaining joint projects.
