On the night of October 1, 2024, Israel reported that it was hit by a barrage of Iranian missiles, with estimates varying between 180 and 220 projectiles. Iran claimed the attack was in retaliation for the assassination of several high-profile figures: former Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh, former Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah, and Quds Force commander Abbas Nilforoushan.

According to Israeli military radio, the initial estimates of around 200 missiles were revised to 180. However, what were the specific targets hit, and what weapons were used?

Iranian state television reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) used Fattah hypersonic missiles for the first time. The Iranian Chief of Staff confirmed that key sites were hit, including a Mossad headquarters and Hatzerim Airbase, which Iran claims was involved in the assassination of Nasrallah. Three major Israeli airbases, including Nevatim, which houses F-35 fighter jets, were also targeted.

The attack extended to radars and tank formations near Gaza, with Iranian state television identifying Nevatim, Hatzerim, and Tel Nof airbases as key targets. Additionally, Iranian missiles reportedly targeted defense radar systems connected to Israel’s Arrow-2 and Arrow-3 missile defense systems.

A video analysis by CNN indicated that one of the Iranian missiles detonated less than a kilometer from Mossad’s headquarters in Tel Aviv. ABC News, citing a U.S. official, reported that Iran launched the missiles in two waves, confirming the extent of the strike on Israel’s southern Nevatim airbase.
