Egypt has secured its place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 after a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Iran, finishing second in Group G. The Pharaohs clinched their spot behind Belgium, who dominated New Zealand with a convincing 5-1 victory.
Egypt World Cup Round 32
This marks Egypt's fourth appearance in the tournament, and their qualification builds on a historic first-ever World Cup win against New Zealand in the second group stage match. Egypt concludes the group stage with 5 points, while Iran gathered 3 points from three draws. New Zealand finished at the bottom of the group with just one point.
Mahmoud Saber, making his tournament debut, put Egypt ahead just five minutes into the match. He capitalized on a rebound from Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand's initial save, striking a powerful left-footed shot that found its way between the keeper's legs and into the net.
Six minutes later, defender Mohamed Abdel Monem conceded a penalty after a defensive error on Mehdi Taremi, but Egyptian goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy brilliantly saved the spot-kick. Iran, participating in their seventh World Cup, found an equalizer in the 14th minute through Ramin Rezaeian, who followed up on a strong shot initially parried by El Shenawy.
In a dramatic turn during added time, Shuja Khalilzadeh appeared to score a late winner for Iran, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review confirmed an offside position.
With this result, Egypt finishes second in the group, trailing Belgium only on goal difference. The Pharaohs are now set to face Australia in the next round on July 3rd.
