Bus Operators Must Renew Older Vehicles by Algiers Deadline

The Algiers transport directorate has issued a directive requiring public transport operators in the wilaya to submit renewal applications for buses aged 30 years or more by August 21, 2026. This measure targets 42 identified transporters whose vehicles are listed for replacement and have not yet initiated the procedure. Failure to comply by the deadline will result in the permanent removal of these vehicles from circulation, marking a significant step in the ongoing national program to modernize the public passenger transport fleet.

This initiative builds on a national effort that saw the withdrawal of buses over 30 years old commence on August 6, according to the National Organization of Algerian Transporters (ONTA). The broader program stems from government directives issued after an accident in El Harrach in August 2025, which underscored concerns about the age of vehicles used in collective transport. Transport Minister Saïd Sayoud previously stated that 5,400 buses exceeding 30 years of service were slated for withdrawal within a six-month period, representing the initial phase of a plan to modernize an estimated 84,000 buses nationwide. A subsequent phase is planned to replace an additional 28,000 vehicles older than 20 years.

To facilitate this transition, the Algiers transport directorate has pledged “all necessary facilities” to assist operators throughout the renewal process. The national program includes substantial support mechanisms, with the state contributing 20% of the cost of a new vehicle, while transporters cover 10%. Additionally, the acquisition of new buses benefits from exemptions from customs duties and Value Added Tax (TVA). The remaining balance can be financed through monthly repayments over a period of up to ten years, providing comprehensive financial incentives to ensure a smooth and effective modernization of Algeria's public transport infrastructure.
