Record Cereal Harvest Positions Algeria for Self-Sufficiency

The 2026 harvest campaign in Algeria is projected to achieve record-breaking production levels for durum wheat and barley. These unprecedented volumes, supported by state initiatives and beneficial rainfall, are set to mark a significant milestone in Algerian agriculture. According to Ghani Benali, President of the National Interprofessional Council for the Cereal Sector (CCIFC), production figures for these cereals have reached historic peaks not seen since 1962. The anticipated yields are expected to ensure national self-sufficiency in durum wheat and barley, with potential for surpluses.

International bodies have also provided positive assessments for Algeria's cereal output. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates Algeria's overall cereal production at 4.65 million tons for 2026. Separately, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) projects a total harvest of approximately 5 million tons, which represents nearly 30 percent above the five-year average. This performance marks the highest agricultural output recorded by the country since 2019. Despite an initial drought at the start of the season that delayed sowing in Western Algeria, abundant rainfall from December 2025 facilitated a complete regeneration of vegetation across the country.

While the 2026 harvest demonstrates Algeria's capacity for high agricultural yields under favorable conditions, the nation will continue to source soft wheat and maize from international markets to meet its broader cereal requirements. However, the confirmed self-sufficiency in durum wheat, alongside a surplus of barley, significantly strengthens the country's food security in these crucial sectors. This record harvest underscores the potential for achieving sustainable food sovereignty in Algeria.
