Mediterranean Games: Algeria Seeks to Build on Oran 2022 Success

The first contingent of the Algerian official delegation for the 40th Mediterranean Games arrived in Taranto, Italy, on Wednesday morning, departing from Algiers International Airport via a special flight. This initial group comprises 73 athletes across various individual sports, including swimming, boxing, and wrestling, alongside the national handball and volleyball teams. The Games are scheduled to take place from August 21 to September 3, 2026, with the official opening ceremony slated for Friday evening.
Algeria is participating in the multi-sport event with a full delegation of 248 athletes, including 151 men and 97 women. These athletes will compete across 27 disciplines out of the 33 featured in the official program. The nation’s primary objective for this edition is to build upon the momentum and positive dynamic established during the 2022 Mediterranean Games hosted in Oran.
The Algerian contingent's medal aspirations are particularly focused on individual disciplines such as athletics and boxing, with renowned athletes like Kaylia Nemour among those representing national hopes. The overall Algerian delegation, including 76 officials and coaches, along with 10 referees, totals 334 individuals for the Taranto Games, which will see participation from 26 National Olympic Committees.
