Annaba Phosphate Port Enters Second Development Phase

The Annaba phosphate port extension project has officially entered its second phase of development. This significant milestone for Algeria's port infrastructure was marked by a strategic coordination meeting on August 18, 2026, presided over by the Wali of Annaba, Abdelkrim Laamouri, to initiate the work. This new stage is focused on establishing the port's superstructures, which are vital for expanding the logistical and industrial capabilities of the region.

A major Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract was signed on August 12 between the national entity Sonatrach and the Chinese firm China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) to facilitate this development. During the coordination meeting, the Wali of Annaba issued firm directives to executive directors, emphasizing the project's absolute priority, the need to remove bureaucratic hurdles, and ensuring seamless interconnection among all stakeholders. Local authorities have also allocated a strategic plot of land in the Sidi Salem area of El Bouni commune, intended to house an integrated living base for Sonatrach personnel, ensuring optimal accommodation and continuous progress.

The project, which is designed to eventually support the export of phosphate extracted from the Bled El Hadba mines, is moving forward with significant progress already visible. Inspections have confirmed that 680 of the planned 1,332 piles have been installed, forming a crucial part of the structural foundation. Concurrently, the construction of the rockfill dike along the quay wall is progressing. The port's ultimate goal is to feature a deep-water mineral quay capable of accommodating vessels up to 80,000 tonnes. Furthermore, a specialized dredging vessel has been actively engaged in marine sand backfilling since June 15, having already injected approximately 1.2 million cubic meters to stabilize the platform and seabed. The fabrication of reinforced concrete beams and prefabricated slabs, key components for the quay's superstructure, is also underway.
