Sheikh Mohamed Laïd Tidjani, Respected Scholar, Passes at 72

Dr. Sidi Mohamed Laïd Tidjani, the esteemed Sheikh of the Tidjania zawiya of Témacine, passed away on Thursday at the age of 72, leading to widespread mourning within Algeria's religious and scientific communities. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune extended his condolences to the family, recognizing Dr. Tidjani as an eminent figure and a significant religious and scientific symbol for the nation. The President underscored Dr. Tidjani's lifelong dedication to knowledge, teaching, spirituality, and fostering unity among people.

Dr. Tidjani was known for his unique intellectual journey, which seamlessly merged profound religious scholarship with rigorous academic science. Raised in a family valuing knowledge and virtue, he received his initial religious education from his father, Sidi Mohamed Bachir, and continued his spiritual formation at the Tidjania zawiya. Concurrently, he pursued higher education, culminating in a doctorate in solid-state physics from the University of Paris. This distinctive dual background shaped his refusal to perceive any conflict between religious and secular fields of knowledge. His career at the University of Constantine, where he held various responsibilities, exemplified his ability to integrate teaching, university research, and administrative duties.

As the ninth Khalife of the Témacine zawiya, succeeding his father in 1420 AH, Dr. Tidjani was instrumental in preserving its rich heritage of knowledge, education, and spirituality while addressing contemporary concerns. He dedicated his efforts to reform and unity, actively working to gather people, offer counsel, calm tensions, and bring hearts closer. President Tebboune emphasized that Dr. Tidjani believed there was no contradiction between authenticity and modernity, nor between religious sciences and the sciences of the universe, viewing all forms of knowledge as serving humanity.

President Tebboune highlighted that the passing of such an individual represents a loss not solely for his family or the zawiya, but for a considerable part of Algeria's scientific, national, and spiritual memory. Dr. Tidjani's enduring legacy is evident in the generations he educated, the knowledge he transmitted, and the values of moderation and unity he championed. In a continuation of this spiritual lineage, Dr. Sidi Ahmed Chawki Tidjani, a descendant of the zawiya's founder, Sidi Ali Tamacini, has been officially installed as the new Sheikh, ensuring the ongoing mission of the institution.
