Road Safety to See Proactive Measures with Tachograph Use

Algeria is moving forward with the activation of tachograph devices in heavy vehicles and passenger buses. This initiative, which follows discussions led by the Minister of Interior, Local Communities, and Transport, Said Saayoud, aims to enhance road safety by integrating technical data into the national traffic accident prevention system. The focus is on developing advanced control tools for vehicles that cover long distances and transport numerous passengers.

Nabila Farhat, President of the National Association of Professional Driving Instructors, has commended this development, describing it as a positive step towards bolstering control and prevention in professional transport. The tachograph allows for the tracking of vehicle speed, driving time, and rest periods, which is critical for professional drivers of heavy trucks and passenger buses. This shift moves beyond traditional post-violation monitoring to proactive surveillance, using technical data to identify and mitigate risk factors such as excessive speed, prolonged driving hours, and driver fatigue, thereby reducing accident potential.

The system's full potential lies in its ability to contribute to a national database of road risks. By collecting and analyzing data on recurring violations, speed infractions, and non-compliance with driving and rest regulations, authorities can identify high-risk vehicles, routes, and periods. This data-driven approach allows for the targeted deployment of human and technical resources to areas most in need of intervention. Ultimately, the primary goal is not merely to record violations, but to reduce risk factors before accidents occur, emphasizing prevention, training, and awareness for both drivers and transport operators.

Effective implementation of the tachograph system requires a comprehensive national road safety policy that encompasses driver training, vehicle maintenance, and regular technical inspections. Ensuring the technical integrity of heavy vehicles and buses, alongside proper calibration and data utilization from the devices, is crucial. This integrated approach, which also includes training control agents to interpret data and clarify responsibilities among drivers, operators, and companies, positions the tachograph activation as a significant turning point in elevating professional transport safety standards in Algeria.
