Kyiv Ready to Aid Algeria in French Nuclear Test Legacy Cleanup

Ukrainian Ambassador to Algeria Oleksandr Voronin has revealed his country's readiness to share expertise and assist Algeria in cleaning up desert sites contaminated by nuclear radiation. This contamination is attributed to French nuclear tests conducted during the colonial era, particularly in the Reggane region, which had harmful consequences for both people and the environment. The ambassador highlighted Ukraine's extensive experience in dealing with the aftermath of nuclear disasters, specifically referencing the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear power plant explosion.
This offer of assistance comes as Kyiv seeks to further strengthen its relations with Algeria. Ambassador Voronin noted the existing strong ties, recalling that Algeria was among the first countries to officially recognize Ukraine's independence in 1991. Kyiv is actively pursuing opportunities to enhance these bilateral connections, with a specific focus on the economic and agricultural sectors.
In line with expanding cooperation, important discussions are currently underway between the agriculture ministries of both Algeria and Ukraine. These talks explore the possibility of direct Ukrainian investment in the cultivation of wheat, barley, and other grains within Algeria. Ambassador Voronin conveyed a positive outlook on these ongoing negotiations, stating that the two nations are "on the right track" towards fruitful agricultural collaboration.
