Omani Group, Algeria Formalize Arzew Fertilizer Plant Expansion

Algeria’s Minister of Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab, hosted Sheikh Saad bin Suhail Bahwan, Chairman of the Omani Suhail Bahwan Holding Group, at the ministry headquarters. The meeting was also attended by the Omani Ambassador to Algeria, Saif bin Nasser bin Rashid Al-Badaai, and Sonatrach CEO Noureddine Daoudi, alongside ministry officials. Both sides affirmed the strong fraternal and historical ties between Algeria and Oman, acknowledging the positive trajectory of their bilateral cooperation. This dynamism, they noted, reflects a shared political commitment from the leadership of both nations to forge a strategic partnership founded on economic integration and mutual benefit.

The discussions culminated in an official agreement to transition from preliminary talks and studies to the practical implementation phase of the expansion project for the Algerian-Omani Fertilizers Company (AOA) plant. Located in the Arzew industrial zone, this project involves adding a new production line designed to increase the plant’s current output capacity by 50%. The expansion specifically targets increasing the industrial and production capabilities for ammonia and urea, with the goal of enhancing the added value of national resources and promoting processing industries.

This significant agreement is the result of continuous technical and commercial consultations held throughout the past year. Minister Arkab underscored the hydrocarbons sector’s full commitment to providing all necessary support and removing any obstacles to accelerate the completion of this joint strategic project between Sonatrach and the Omani group. The implementation of the expansion is set to proceed according to predetermined timelines.
