Italy and Algeria Plan Future Green Hydrogen Port Infrastructure
Algeria and Italy have significantly advanced their maritime energy transition cooperation following a recent international roundtable held in Livorno. Organized by the Gente di Mare Foundation, the event brought together Algerian and Italian academics, institutions, and industrialists to establish a framework for bilateral collaboration focused on green hydrogen and future port infrastructures. This pivotal gathering served as a key platform to accelerate the decarbonization of maritime transport, addressing a critical aspect of sustainable energy development.
Algeria demonstrated its strategic ambitions through the active involvement of the University of Sciences and Technology of Oran Mohamed-Boudiaf (USTO-MB), led by its rector, Professor Ahmed Hamou, alongside leaders from its subsidiary USTOMB FPS Spa. This substantial academic and technical presence underscores Algeria's commitment to connecting its scientific institutions with the international industrial landscape. The roundtable featured prominent sector figures such as Giancarlo Dionisi, Prefect of Livorno, and Francesco Macrì, President of the Leonardo group, alongside major industrial players including F.lli Cosulich, ErreDue, Compolab, and Gas and Heat, who shared their expertise with academic researchers like those from the University of Pisa.
Discussions during the roundtable delved into the entire value chain required for the deployment of green hydrogen within the port ecosystem. Elena Di Tizio, Director General of the Gente di Mare Foundation, emphasized the crucial role of human capital in driving this industrial transformation, stressing the importance of training highly qualified personnel to leverage technological innovation. This foundational meeting has established the basis for tangible projects between Algeria and Italy, encompassing applied research, specialized training programs, and industrial partnerships, all geared towards shaping the zero-emission ports of the future and positioning Algeria as a significant clean energy actor in the Mediterranean.
