Abdou, Bakhsis Claim Two Boxing Silvers at Mediterranean Games

Algerian boxers Mustapha Abdou and Ismaïl Bakhsis achieved notable success at the Mediterranean Games 2026 in Taranto, Italy, securing two silver medals. Abdou competed in the 80 kg category, while Bakhsis earned his medal in the 65 kg division, adding significantly to Algeria's overall performance at the prestigious international event.

Both athletes expressed satisfaction with their achievements. Abdou, participating in his first Mediterranean Games, described his silver medal as a great honor, noting the final match was very close. He views the tournament as an essential preparation step for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Similarly, Bakhsis, in his international debut, voiced pride in his medal and highlighted the high technical level of the competition, which he found highly beneficial for his future challenges, including the Olympics. He affirmed his dedication to strive for participation in future Olympic events.

National boxing coach Mohamed Allalou praised the boxers, remarking on Abdou's prior international experience at the junior level and Bakhsis's distinctive start to his international career. Allalou emphasized that the technical staff considers both athletes as a future core for the national team. The Algerian boxing contingent, comprising 10 athletes, concluded its participation in Taranto with a total of three silver medals, including one by Fatiha Mansouri, and two bronze medals, further underscoring the team's strong showing.
