French President Emmanuel Macron delivered a series of significant statements from Nairobi on the sidelines of the “Africa Forward” summit, signaling a clear desire from the Élysée Palace to adopt a fresh approach aimed at easing tensions and rebuilding relations with Algeria after months of diplomatic rupture.
Macron told dzwatch that the time has come to move beyond disputes, stressing that the recent visit of French official Élise Roufo to Algeria could represent a turning point toward resuming bilateral dialogue on more solid foundations.
He emphasized that relations between the two countries must be “calm, constructive, and based on mutual respect,” warning that the continued freeze serves no one and only obstructs vital files such as security cooperation, counter-terrorism in the Sahel region, migration, and trade.
Macron also sharply criticized certain French political factions for exploiting the Algeria file for electoral purposes, confirming that freezing dialogue channels has proven to be a failure, particularly on sensitive issues that can only be resolved through direct negotiation with Algeria.
