Algeria’s Dams Reach 60% Capacity Amid Record Rainfall Season

Algeria’s dams have reached a remarkable 60% fill rate, with stored water volumes climbing to 4.6 billion cubic meters — a stunning 59.55% capacity level, the Director General of the National Agency for Dams and Transfers told dzwatch exclusively on Thursday.

Compared to the same period last year, dam fill rates have surged by nearly 20 percentage points, reflecting the exceptional rainfall recorded across the national territory this season.

Twenty dams have now reached 100% capacity, including the Beni Haroun dam (Mila), Tichy Haf (Bejaia), and Bouhanifia (Mascara).

The official also noted that surplus water presents an opportunity to open bottom drainage valves to flush out accumulated silt and sediment.

Algeria’s National Agency for Dams and Transfers is set to launch its fourth dam-cleaning campaign shortly, targeting the removal of 10 million cubic meters of silt to preserve long-term storage capacity.
