Petkovic Satisfied with Algeria’s World Cup Campaign Despite Round of 32 Exit

Algeria head coach Vladimir Petkovic expressed his satisfaction with the national team’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite their elimination in the Round of 32 following a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland.

Speaking after the match, Petkovic said that qualifying for the World Cup after a 12-year absence was a historic moment for the national team. He also noted that reaching the Round of 32 for the second time in the history of the Greens was an achievement worthy of recognition.

“It was a historic moment for us to qualify for this tournament after 12 years. Reaching the Round of 32 for the second time in the national team’s history is also a remarkable result, and there are many positive points we can take from this participation,” the Bosnian coach said.

Petkovic admitted that Algeria had hoped to continue their journey and reach the later stages of the tournament. However, he said Switzerland knew how to make the most of their chances and settle the match. He stressed that the team’s elimination should serve as an opportunity to learn lessons and correct mistakes in the future.

“We wanted to go further in this tournament, but unfortunately we were unable to do so. We must accept this result and learn from the shortcomings and mistakes that appeared during the competition,” he added.

The Greens’ coach concluded by praising the efforts made by his players throughout the tournament. He confirmed that he congratulated them after the match for the fighting spirit they showed, considering that the team delivered good performances and deserved to reach the knockout stage, despite the bitterness of the defeat against Switzerland.
