Minister of Health, Abdelhak Saihi, received the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, Hector Igarza Cabrera, at the ministry headquarters.

A statement from the ministry on Tuesday indicated that both parties discussed the level of relations between the two countries, emphasizing their mutual commitment to enhancing these ties, particularly in the health sector.

In this context, the two parties talked about the possibility of increasing Cuban medical missions to Algeria, especially in the specialties of gynecology and obstetrics, anesthesia and resuscitation, ophthalmology, and medical imaging. This is in line with the provisions of the health cooperation agreement set to be signed soon between the two countries.

Additionally, they discussed the potential benefits of leveraging Cuba’s experience in preventive medicine (promoting the reference physician concept), which the minister highlighted to enhance the services offered by Algeria’s health sector. This includes conducting screening activities, particularly in the specialties of orthopedics and trauma, diabetic foot care, and ophthalmology.

Both parties emphasized the importance of expanding training through the establishment of a specialized unit, within the framework of the cooperation fields to be broadened between the two countries. This includes preventive measures and providing local health services, considering Cuba’s experience in this area and the significant importance Algeria places on this process.

The minister confirmed that the visit by the Cuban Minister of Health to Algeria at the end of 2024 will contribute to elevating the level of cooperative relations between the two countries. It will also provide an excellent opportunity to further discuss bilateral cooperation opportunities, especially as it coincides with the convening of the Algerian-Cuban Joint Committee.
