Global Fruit Leader Algeria Prioritizes Export Expansion

Algeria has established itself as a significant global producer of various agricultural products, particularly fruits like watermelon, apricot, and almond. Recent data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) highlight the nation's expanding productive base and substantial untapped potential in international markets. In 2024, Algeria ranked as the fourth-largest global producer of watermelon, yielding 2.52 million tonnes from approximately 62,949 hectares and contributing nearly 2.4% to the global total. This growth is notable given challenging climatic conditions, supported by the development of new agricultural hubs in the South and Hauts-Plateaux through irrigation and new land exploitation.
The country also maintains a prominent position in apricot production, consistently ranking among the top five global producers for several years. Historical FAOSTAT data from 2022 recorded 203,916 tonnes, placing Algeria fifth worldwide, with scientific publications utilizing 2024 data continuing to place it in the global top five. Furthermore, Algeria holds the eleventh position globally for almond production in 2024, with 68,512 tonnes, representing about 1.7% of the world's output and surpassing several Mediterranean producers. While these figures underscore Algeria's robust agricultural capabilities and diverse arboricultural potential, they also reveal a significant disparity between high production volumes and relatively low export figures, such as only 275 tonnes of watermelon exported in 2024.
Recognizing this challenge, the Algerian state is implementing a new strategy and facilitations to enhance its agricultural exports. This initiative aims to transform the country from a major producer to a competitive agricultural player on the international market. Key measures include strengthening cold storage infrastructure, modernizing sorting and packaging processes, improving traceability, and developing distinct Algerian agricultural brands. By focusing on agro-industry, logistics, and international market access, Algeria seeks to convert its substantial productive potential into greater economic value and export revenues, building on a broader transformation of its agricultural sector that includes expanded cultivated areas, enhanced irrigation, and increased private investment.
