Malian Prime Minister Arrives in Algiers to Renew Dialogue

Malian Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga arrived in Algiers on August 24 for an official working visit, confirming a significant diplomatic rapprochement between Mali and Algeria. Mr. Maïga was received at the invitation of his Algerian counterpart, Sifi Ghrieb. During his stay, the Malian Prime Minister is expected to convey a message from Transitional President Assimi Goïta to Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and will also engage in discussions with Mr. Ghrieb.

This visit marks a pivotal moment in turning the page on a period of diplomatic tensions between the two neighboring countries. The invitation from Algeria followed a telephone conversation between the two Prime Ministers on August 9, signaling a mutual commitment to prioritize consultation and direct dialogue. Algeria has historically played a crucial mediation role in Malian affairs, notably facilitating the 2015 Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali, known as the Algiers Process.

The current re-establishment of direct contact is anticipated to progressively restore the strong relationship that has long been built on proximity and solidarity. This new approach offers both nations an opportunity to address common interests, including border security, the fight against terrorism, economic cooperation, and overall stability within the Sahel region. The visit underscores Algeria's continued position as a key diplomatic actor in the region.
