Ambassador Khaled Leads Push for Human Rights in African Peace

Algeria, through its Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the African Union, Mohamed Khaled, recently spearheaded an annual consultative meeting of the African Peace and Security Council. Serving as the Council's president for August, Ambassador Khaled chaired the session with the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, which focused on integrating human rights into conflict prevention and sustainable peacebuilding efforts across the continent.

During the meeting, Ambassador Khaled underscored that the respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms forms a crucial pillar for fostering peace, security, and stability throughout Africa. He advocated for enhanced coordination among African Union mechanisms to translate commitments and decisions into tangible actions. Furthermore, he highlighted the significant role of non-governmental organizations in early warning systems, mediation, and peacebuilding, stressing the need to bolster their credibility. A key proposal from Algeria included establishing a periodic meeting between the Peace and Security Council and various African bodies involved in human rights, governance, and democracy to unify efforts.

The consultative meeting concluded with a consensus that human rights should be recognized not merely as a separate objective, but as an indispensable instrument for addressing the root causes of conflicts and preventing their escalation. This approach aims to fortify civilian protection, advance justice, and uphold the rule of law within the African continent. The President of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, Idrissa Sow, also emphasized the development of early warning mechanisms in human rights and reinforced cooperation with the Peace and Security Council.
