Algiers-Berlin Direct Air Service Signals Closer Algerian-German Ties
Air Algérie officially formalized a new direct flight route connecting Algiers and Berlin on Wednesday, following an announcement made by President Tebboune during his visit to Germany last July. The national carrier confirmed the launch on August 25, highlighting Berlin as a destination where "history, culture, and modernity coexist." The inaugural flight is scheduled for September 14, 2026, operating a weekly round trip every Monday. Initially, the service will run as a direct Algiers-Berlin route, with reservations already open through the winter 2026/2027 season; from October 31, 2026, the itinerary will transition to a triangular Algiers-Frankfurt-Berlin service.
This new air link provides a significant benefit for the Algerian diaspora in Germany, which numbers over 50,000 individuals and currently relies on a single existing flight between Algiers and Frankfurt. The route is part of a broader economic rapprochement between Algeria and Germany. During his visit to Berlin, President Tebboune noted the positive state of relations, emphasizing Germany's interest in Algerian natural gas and affirming Algeria's reliability as a consistent energy supplier.
Further underscoring the expanding bilateral cooperation, a new hydrogen corridor between Algeria and Germany is also slated for launch. This project has been identified in a joint declaration as a "global gateway project and European energy route." Kamel Rezig, Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Exports, reported a substantial increase in trade volume between the two nations, which grew by over $1 billion in one year, from $1.74 billion in 2024 to nearly $3 billion. Cooperation is anticipated to deepen, particularly in the energy sector, with Germany showing interest in Algerian green hydrogen and actively encouraging its companies to invest in related projects in Algeria. A dedicated guide for green hydrogen investment in Algeria has been developed by the German Federal Ministry of Economy and Energy in collaboration with the governmental agency GIC.
