At least 54 people have lost their lives due to devastating floods that have swept through the Tibesti region in northern Chad, according to authorities and local media reports on Thursday.

Mohamed Toutchi Shidi, the governor of Tibesti, stated that continuous rainfall from Friday through Wednesday also resulted in significant property destruction.

Local media reported that more than 50,000 people have been displaced by the floods in the region.

Fatima Boukar Kossei, the Minister of Social Work, National Solidarity, and Humanitarian Affairs, announced the establishment of temporary shelters to accommodate those displaced by the disaster.

Kossei, after a tour of the capital, N’Djamena, used social media to inform residents about the availability of these shelters. She emphasized, “It is essential for the affected population to settle there to avoid health risks associated with the floods,” adding that “all necessary measures have been taken to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in this location.”

Chad has been experiencing floods since mid-May, which have already impacted 245,000 people, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Last week, the office reported that heavy rains and severe flooding had already claimed 40 lives across the country.
