The Future of Western Sahara Belongs Solely to the Sahrawi People

Madrid – Abdallah Al-Arabi, the representative of the Polisario Front in Spain, reiterated that the future of Western Sahara is to be decided solely by the Sahrawi people, who have the exclusive right to self-determination without external interference. This statement, reported by the Sahrawi Press Agency (SPS) on Thursday, was made during an online seminar organized by the Polisario Front’s Spanish delegation and the Federation of Solidarity Organizations with the Sahrawi Republic, bringing together Spanish municipal representatives and supporters of the Sahrawi cause.

Al-Arabi underscored a recent “historic” victory for the Sahrawi people at the European Union Court of Justice, a decision that bolsters their fight against the illegal exploitation of Western Sahara’s natural resources. The ruling, according to him, reinforces the Sahrawis’ position in their struggle for sovereignty over their land and resources.

Carmelo Ramírez, head of the Federation of Solidarity Organizations, expressed disappointment over the lack of progress in finding a lasting solution to the Western Sahara conflict, despite numerous UN resolutions affirming the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. He highlighted the historical role of Spanish municipalities in supporting the Sahrawi cause, noting the significant political and humanitarian initiatives that have strengthened solidarity and friendship with the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).

Participants at the seminar developed strategic plans to expand support for the Sahrawi cause, with municipalities pledging active backing for the Sahrawis’ right to decide their future. Discussions also highlighted the importance of transitioning from humanitarian aid to sustainable development projects aimed at fortifying the Sahrawi Republic’s structures for future independence.
