Batna Screens “Maqden Between Water and Fire” by Bulgarian Director Todor Shapkanov

The city of Batna hosted the screening of “Maqden Between Water and Fire,” a feature film by Bulgarian director Todor Shapkanov, at the Aurès Cinematheque as part of the fourth edition of the International Imdghassen Festival for Short Feature Films, running from May 11 to 15.

The film, directed by Todor Shapkanov—who also serves as the jury president for this year’s festival edition—was presented to the public for the first time in a pre-premiere showing, with plans for it to hit cinemas starting September. “Maqden Between Water and Fire” captivated an audience of journalists, artists, and festival guests with its compelling narrative over the course of approximately ninety minutes.

The plot unfolds around a water polo player who turns to wrestling to avenge the death of his friend, who was killed in the wrestling ring. The protagonist strives to conquer the championship and defeat his rival on the very same stage, weaving a tale of determination and honor.

The screening in Batna is part of a broader effort to enrich the local cultural landscape and engage audiences with diverse cinematic experiences from around the world. The International Imdghassen Film Festival continues to be a pivotal platform for showcasing unique stories and fostering dialogue through film.
