The head coach of the Algerian national team, Vladimir Petković, held the traditional pre-match press conference in Vancouver ahead of the round of 32 match at the 2026 World Cup against Switzerland.
Petković confirmed that his team will go into the match “with the intention of winning and reaching the furthest stage possible in the World Cup finals.” He stressed that the focus of the Greens will be on improving their own performance rather than worrying too much about the opponent’s strengths.
The national coach explained that the technical staff is focusing on the areas that need to be improved within the team. He added: “We will not focus on Switzerland’s strengths or weaknesses, but on ourselves. We need to improve our system and the communication between the players.”
Regarding the goalkeeping position, the national coach said that all options remain open, stating: “We have three goalkeepers ready for the match. I know who will play, and he will give his best.”
Petković added: “I am Swiss, but tomorrow my country is Algeria, and I want to win. I do not mix things up. I experienced beautiful moments there, and I am proud to be Swiss, but tomorrow I am the coach of Algeria.”
Speaking about the nature of World Cup matches, the coach said that every game is difficult, regardless of the opponent. He stated: “In the World Cup, there are no easy matches, no matter who the opponent is.”
He admitted that Switzerland is considered the favorite by many observers, but he expressed confidence in his players’ ability to qualify. He added: “Switzerland has the advantage in the predictions, but we will do what is necessary to qualify.”
It should be noted that the Algerian national football team will face Switzerland on Friday at 4:00 a.m. Algeria time in Vancouver, in the round of 32 of the World Cup. The Greens will be aiming to secure victory and continue their journey with confidence toward the furthest stage possible.
