Sonatrach Says Arzew Refinery Incident Brought Fully Under Control

Sonatrach announced on Thursday that an incident had occurred at the Arzew Refinery, located in the industrial zone of Arzew in the province of Oran.
In a statement, the national energy company said the incident took place at 2:30 a.m. at the refinery, specifically at the 5-liter finished oils unitary filling unit, known as Unit 3900.
According to the same source, the situation was fully brought under control at 4:40 a.m., with no injuries or human losses reported. Sonatrach explained that the rapid response was made possible thanks to the activation of the mutual assistance plan, the mobilization of resources from the Arzew Tactical Command Center, and the support of the Civil Protection services.
The company added that all necessary measures have been taken to determine the causes of the incident. The investigation is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding what happened and help prevent similar situations in the future.
Sonatrach also reassured its partners and customers that the incident had no impact on the production of fuel or lubricating oils. The company confirmed that the supply of the national market from the Arzew Refinery is continuing normally, without any disruption.
This clarification comes as part of the company’s effort to provide transparent information following the incident and to reassure the public about the continuity of operations at one of Algeria’s important refining facilities.
The Arzew industrial zone is considered a key energy hub in the country, and any incident in such a strategic area usually raises concerns about production and supply. However, Sonatrach stressed that the situation was managed quickly and efficiently, and that operations linked to national market supply remain stable.
