During the 10th World Water Forum in Bali, Indonesia, Minister of Water Resources Taha Derbal emphasized Algeria’s commitment to enhancing water resources and preserving the environment and ecosystems.

In his address during a session attended by ministers and representatives from participating countries, Derbal stated, “The issue of water has a significant impact on living conditions, social and economic development, and the protection of ecosystems.”

Derbal explained that water also plays a crucial role in achieving sustainable development goals to protect the interests of future generations.

He noted that Algeria belongs to a region highly prone to droughts and floods, in addition to the increasing demands for drinking water and the needs of the industrial and agricultural sectors.

These challenges, the minister added, have driven Algeria to adopt several measures to address water stress.

“The Algerian government, under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has implemented a multi-dimensional national strategy through the National Water Plan 2030,” Derbal stated.

The strategy aims to develop infrastructure to meet the country’s water needs in the medium and long term.

To achieve this goal, the minister affirmed that “Algeria is working on all fronts to enrich and rationalize its national water policy to adapt to new developments and address issues related to transboundary water resources due to certain projects by a neighboring country.”

He pointed out that since 2005, Algeria has thoroughly reviewed its water resource legislation, culminating in the adoption of a law that enshrines the principles of water use and management.

This includes the right to access water and sanitation for all citizens, while respecting environmental and social balance, emphasized Taha Derbal.
