New York – Josep Borrell, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, issued a stark warning on Monday, stating that Israeli aggression against Lebanon threatens to plunge the entire Middle East into a “full-scale war.”
Speaking ahead of a meeting with G7 representatives in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Borrell said, “We are on the brink of a full-scale war.” He reiterated calls for a ceasefire, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
Borrell expressed deep concern over the suffering of Lebanese civilians, describing the toll as “intolerable and unacceptable.” He stressed that “this is the time to act; everyone must do whatever they can to stop what is happening,” while acknowledging the failure of diplomatic efforts so far to halt the war in Gaza.
On Monday, Israeli warplanes launched hundreds of airstrikes on southern and eastern Lebanon, resulting in 492 deaths, including 35 children and 58 women, and leaving 1,645 injured, according to Lebanon’s Ministry of Health.
