The German Football Federation (DFB) has sacked Hansi Flick as head coach of the national team, following a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Japan on Saturday in Wolfsburg.
Rudi Völler, the DFB’s sporting director, will take temporary charge of the “Mannschaft” until a new coach is appointed.
Flick, who was sacked following the match, said he believed he was still the “right man to lead the team” despite the loss to Japan in a friendly international.
Flick took over as manager of the German national team in 2021, replacing Joachim Löw, who spent 15 years at the helm and led the team to the 2014 World Cup title.
Germany will host the next edition of the European Championship in 2024, and the team will face France in a friendly match on Tuesday.
