Algeria-France Legal Ties: Expert Calls for Urgent Reform of Family Law Disputes

Algerian political and legal activist Ammar Khbaba has raised a critical and often-overlooked dimension of Algeria-France relations — the judicial and legal framework governing disputes between the two countries’ citizens.

In an exclusive statement to dzwatch, Khbaba described family law cases as among “the most complex legal issues between the two nations,” noting that while such matters rarely surface in official political discourse, they are “present daily inside courtrooms and lawyers’ offices.”

Khbaba highlighted that the deep human ties between both sides — including a large Algerian diaspora in France — have created a tangled web of cross-border legal cases involving mixed marriages, divorce, child custody, alimony, inheritance, and enforcement of court rulings issued in either country.

His remarks came in the wake of the recent meeting between Algerian Justice Minister Lotfi Boudjemaa and his French counterpart Gérald Darmanin, where such sensitive legal files were notably absent from the public agenda.

Khbaba called on both governments to place judicial cooperation on family law at the heart of bilateral negotiations, warning that continued neglect risks leaving thousands of Algerian families without legal protection.
