Algeria’s July 2 Legislative Elections: Candidacy Files Closed Amid Striking Absence of Political Alliances

The midnight deadline for submitting candidacy files for Algeria’s upcoming legislative elections, scheduled for July 2, has officially passed — and the political landscape tells a revealing story.

Across the country’s wilayas, electoral alliances between political parties were virtually nonexistent. The sole exception was a single joint list registered in Jijel wilaya, formed between the “Fajr El Jadid” and “Algeria El Jadida” parties along with a diaspora list.

Officials from both parties told dzwatch exclusively that the limited alliance stemmed from a shared desire to compete jointly on a broader scale, but that organizational hurdles prevented its expansion — most notably, Algeria El Jadida’s delayed entry into the electoral process due to ongoing efforts to finalize its legal status and prepare for its third party congress, which coincided with the signature collection phase.

Other attempts to revive coordination among ideologically aligned political formations — reminiscent of the “Green Algeria Alliance” that brought together several parties in the 2012 elections — ultimately failed to materialize, underscoring a significant retreat in inter-party cooperation ahead of this critical vote.
